Subject: Important School Update from Dr. Catherine Reimer
Dear San Ardo School Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well as we dive back into the full swing of school activities after the New Year. It's heartening to witness our students settling back into their studies with enthusiasm and dedication.
I am delighted to share some positive additions to our school community. We welcome Miss Brianna Harvey, our new Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, who will be working with students two days a week. Additionally, we have a new art teacher, Miss Brenda Scettirni, who commenced lessons with our students on January 19th. Their expertise and passion are valuable assets to our team, and I am confident they will contribute significantly to our students' growth and well-being.
Now, I want to address a matter of importance that concerns the fiscal stability of our school district. We are currently facing uncertain financial times, with a projected $39-68 billion deficit for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The Governor's May revise will determine the implications for school districts, and we will keep you informed as we learn more.
Since 2020, we have experienced a significant decline in enrollment by approximately 30%. Over the past three years, the Governor allowed a 3-year average of prior years' average daily attendance (ADA) to cushion the impact. Unfortunately, this cushion will no longer be available for the 2024-25 academic year.
Compounding the situation, various one-time funding sources from the pandemic are set to expire. These funds were crucial for hiring additional personnel, obtaining supplies for pandemic-related measures, investing in technology, reducing class sizes, and supporting arts and music programs.
I want to convey my concern to parents about the potential impact on our school. If these funds are not spent for their designated purposes, they will be reclaimed by the State at the end of 2024. This situation necessitates a reduction in positions and services to maintain a balanced budget and avoid deficit spending.
While this is not a message the Board or I take lightly, it is crucial for the financial security of our district. The good news is that we have built healthy reserves to weather the upcoming challenges. However, maintaining a balanced budget is paramount.
I am more than willing to address any concerns you may have regarding the budget. Having recently completed my Certified Business Official's program, I am well-versed in the intricacies of our financial situation. Please feel free to reach out, and I will be happy to sit down and discuss any questions or thoughts you may have.
Thank you for your continued support of San Ardo School. Together, we can navigate these challenges and ensure the best possible educational experience for our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Catherine Reimer, Superintendent, San Ardo School
